COVID Diary- Reflections from Our Advisory Board Member Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs

Every Day during the Corona crisis our Advisory Board Member Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs (NL) writes a diary, on request of the Jewish Cultural Quarter in Amsterdam, which is published on the website of the NIW, the only Jewish Dutch Magazine. Rabbi Jacobs is the head of Inter Governmental Relationships at the Rabbinical Centre of Europe. We will be regularly publishing a selection of his informative, sometimes light hearted, but always wise pieces.
For our Dutch readers you can follow the diary every day at NIW home page: https://niw.nl

Vaccine loses to the Minister

Today my eyes fell on Michel Waterman’s column in the NIW in which he writes: “I have to hand in my column today and I don’t have a subject yet. I can tell you that my admiration for columnists who produce on a daily basis has greatly increased.”
After reading this I flattered myself wondering if that compliment was meant for me. And so the question arose in my mind: Am I a rabbi or a columnist? But then I also thought back to that psychotherapist who saw my diary as a therapy. After some thinking I came to the conclusion that my diary is a combination of 1: rabbi 2: columnist 3: therapy.

And so Waterman’s compliment was not addressed to me. A pity, because every now and then I do need a pat on the back (with the elbow of course, because of corona!), Especially when I’m under fire again.

A somewhat out-of-context headline made a few front pages, after which people responded. That was great because it means I don’t write for deaf ears – my message gets through.

What almost bothered me was that a (foreign) colleague, who apparently has little else to do than follow my diary, got in touch with a non-Jewish journalist to protest against the (admittedly clumsy) headline.

It went through my mind to send him a WhatsApp with my phone number. Then at the next opportunity he can first make a phone call before turning a molehill into a mountain. But I did not send that WhatsApp and I am not going to send it. Reason?
I Learned from the conversation between Avraham and Lot about which was read last Shabbath in all the synagogues of the world: “A strife arose between the herdsmen of the flocks of Awram and the herders of the flocks of Lot…. Then Awram said to Lot, Let there be

no strife between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds…. if it is to the left, I will go to the right, if it is to the right, then I will go to the left (Bereshis/ Genesis 13: 7-9).

Why, we may ask, did Abraham leave the choice to Lot? The area, later Israel, was nevertheless the property of Avraham. G-d had promised him this piece of land. He could have shown Lot that he had the best papers!? If we take a grammatical look at the Hebrew

text, we see that the Hebrew word for contention is the first time in the masculine form and the second time in the feminine form. Quarrels arise most quickly between people who spend a lot of time together. So,the most appropriate place for disputes is marriage! How do we handle this? Should the man try to be right? Should the woman stand firm?

The best way to deal with (marital) differences of opinion is: accept! And that is why the word twist is once in the feminine inflection and once in the masculine. Avraham understood that he could have been right with Lot, but also realized that it is better to just let the adversary, Lot in this case, have his way.

And so I will not approach my old colleague on this and when we meet again, just pretend my nose is bleeding! Therapeutically (3) I have written it off with this one, I have made a column (2) of it and, most importantly, I have learned (1) from our patriarch Abraham!

So, what we notice is that people are often unable to see and / or think outside their own limited cocoon. Such a thing is called egotosm, a consequence of the idol ‘I’.

And that problem is unfortunately frequently encountered in our society and can be very harmful.

Dr. Marcel Levi, medical director of ten London hospitals and the son of my former president of the Sinai Center, believes the corona vaccine should be administered now. But the British Minister does not want that yet because perhaps one in 50,000 could suffer from an adverse reaction because the vaccine has not yet been 100% tested. Levi explained to the Minister that even if one in 50,000 gets an unwanted side effect, it is still worth using the vaccine now as it can prevent hundreds from becoming infected with corona and a general lockdown of society. severely dislocated.

The Minister responded to this, according to the newspaper that Dr. Levi quoted that if hundreds die from corona, he, the Minister, will hardly be blamed. But if even one person falls victim to the vaccine he has approved, he will be inundated with criticism. The British Minister is thus also a follower of the idol ‘I’, like my colleague, except that the behaviour of the Minister, G-d forbid, causes people to die, but the behaviour of my colleague has a positive result: a topic for my day!

Lebanese businessman to give Hitler hat to Israeli foundation

“In a cynical world, such a noble act of kindness, generosity and solidarity has bowled us over”, said Rabbi Menachem Margolin – Mr Abdallah Chatila will join the EJA as guest on major Auschwitz trip to receive award.

Following the controversial auction of Nazi memorabilia by Hermann Historica in Munich last week that was raised by the European Jewish Association (EJA) and let to massive uproar and media attention, it has emerged that a prominent Lebanese businessman directly responded to the news by buying over 600,000 euros of nazi memorabilia with the sole purpose of giving it to the Jewish community to do with it as it sees fit.

Rabbi Margolin spoke to Mr Chatila to thank him, and Mr Chatila has accepted an inviation to come to Auschwitz on a delegation organised by the EJA for 100 parliamentarians from across Europe, where the businessman will be awarded for his act.

Besides the top hat belonging to Hitler and the rare edition of Mein Kampf, the Businessman also bought the personal Fuhrer’s cigar box, a silver frame offered to SS commander Ulrich Graf, several handwritten letters to his childhood friend August Kubizek, a box to silver music, Edda Göring’s baptismal gift in 1938, or the typewriter Traudl Junge, Hitler’s assistant, used to capture the Nazi leader’s texts. In a statement today, Rabbi Margolin said,

“We believe that the trade in such items is morally unjustifiable and it seemed, given the uproar and outrage that led up and following the auction that we were not alone.

“We were not prepared however, in this cynical world in which we live, to expect an act of such kindness, such generosity and such solidarity as demonstrated by Mr Chatila. It is clear he understood our aggravation and hurt at the sale, and decided to do something about it in a way that nobody foresaw. We greatly appreciate his understanding that such items have no place on the market, and should ultimately be destroyed. But that he chose to give the items to Jews shows a remarkable conscience and understanding.

“I personally spoke to Mr Chatila on behalf of our Association, our members and the hundreds of communities that we represent to extend our heartfelt thanks for his selfless and important act.

He has also accepted our invitation to attend an upcoming delegation to Auschwitz that we are organising for 100 MPs from across the continent to see and learn first-hand where the Nazi ideology leads. Mr Chatila’s inspiring act is a story that deserves to be told at the highest levels, and he will be there as our guest where we will present him with an award for his act.

“The example set by Mr Chatila is one that deserves as much attention as possible, we thank him for showing the world that an act of righteousness such as this has the power to literally and metaphorically burn the dark Nazi past away.”

“You All Say ‘Never Again’, Make It So”, Urges Rabbi Menachem Margolin

AHEAD OF MUNICH AUCTION TOMORROW, EUROPEAN JEWISH CHIEF CALLS ON GERMAN POLITICAL LEADERS TO BAN SALE OF NAZI MEMORABILIA
AND PUT BUYERS ON WATCH LIST
“You all say ‘Never Again’, make it so”, urges Rabbi Menachem Margolin .
At 10am today morning (CET) a major Munich based auction house Hermann Historica is conducting an online sale of personal items such as cutlery sets, jewellery and signed letters and photographs belonging to the leadership of the Nazi Party – Himmler, Goring and Hitler himself among them.
European Jewish Association (EJA) Chairman Rabbi Menachem has written to the leadership of all of Germany’s mainstream political parties to put in place legislation that will ban the public sale of such items and – in the meantime – compel sellers to divulge the names of buyers so that they can be kept on government watch lists in the interests of public safety.
In his letter to all the political leaders, the EJA Chief suggested that the authorities would want to know who was buying the personal items of Osama Bin Laden, Anders Breivik or Stephan Ernst for public safety reasons, and those glorifying, sentimentalising or adulating the Nazis are every bit as dangerous.
Rabbi Margolin wrote,
“Almost every week we at the European Jewish Association are having to respond to attacks on community buildings and more worryingly still, physical or verbal attacks on Jews themselves. Alarmingly, it is Germany that leads Europe in the sheer volume of reported anti-Semitic incidents.
“Selling such items should be no different to selling the personal items belonging to Osama Bin Laden, or Anders Breivik. The argument of historical interest is pure semantics. As political representatives concerned with the wellbeing and safety of your citizens, we cannot help wonder if you would not want to know who was buying Bin Laden’s fruit bowl or Stephan Ernst’s photographs and why they would even want them.
“In waiting for a ban to be put in place, we urge the German authorities to compel auction houses to divulge the names of those who are buying such material, in order to know whose hands they have fallen into. The names should then be put on a government ‘watch’ list, for public safety.
“Six Million Jewish lives were lost during the Nazi regime. Today an increasing number of Jewish lives are being lost and more are threatened because of the “oldest hatred”.
“Politicians are wont to say ‘never again’. We urge you to make it so.”

I remember that I once tried to find out how easy it is to influence people.

“Dear attendees”, I began my speech, “I know that you are all blessed with a high IQ, and so you know that the world-famous professor Stroempelmacher has proven that…”.

Because I have told everyone that they are intelligent and because professor Stroempelmacher, in my opinion, is world-famous and the attendees must therefore know him, no one dares to raise a hand and ask who Stroempelmacher is and to question my assertion statement.

Let me state first that the hunt for Jews in Amsterdam is completely unacceptable and I hope and expect that the anti-Semites will be arrested and severely punished. I think that is very important, but unfortunately I am not so sure that will happen.

They will probably get away with a community service order of x amount of hours. It is clear that this open violence against the Jewish community is of a harshness not seen in Holland for many decades. I am certain that a number of young Jewish families have now had enough of the Netherlands where they have lived for many generations and of which they thought they were an integral part.

The images of Jews being persecuted are shocking, unacceptable, criminal. I have been assured that there will be a thorough investigation. Was it an organised action and if so, by whom? Did this hunt for Jews come out of the blue or was it predictable? And what could have been done about it and how are we going to prevent this? How many Jews ended up in hospital and was there indeed a case of hostage-taking and/or kidnapping?

Let me emphasise once again that the hunt for Jews is unacceptable and cannot and may not be justified in any way. That 7 October is terrible, but… That ‘but’ is not right.

‘But’, I begin myself, but was it foreseeable? And my spontaneous answer is: ‘absolutely’.

Long before 7 October, anti-Semitism was becoming increasingly visible. October 7th was a good reason to clearly proclaim and upgrade the hatred of Jews. And when a football match is played against Jews, the floodgates of the anti-Semitic dam are opened.

I am saddened that the scapegoats are being sought in the wrong places. A pogrom was organized by the Church in the not so distant past with the full approval of the local or national government. That is not the case here. Perhaps action should have been taken differently, perhaps our government made the wrong assessments, but it is crystal clear to me that our local Amsterdam and national government cannot simply be accused of anti-Semitism. We must await the investigation and hopefully the guilty parties will be arrested with great force.

The number of hours, no, even days that I spend on interviews from England, Italy, the English BBC, Hungary and of course from Israel, has become almost countless. I am constantly answering e-mails and of course also speaking to many Dutch journalists. “Can you still walk the streets as a Jew? Be assured that you can go into hiding on our farm! When will you leave the Netherlands? Is it still responsible for Jews to stay here? Is it responsible for Jewish Americans to come to the Netherlands for a holiday? How long do you think Jews can continue to live in the Netherlands or in Europe?

People are very easily influenced and can change from people into animals just like that.

But people are also very easily influenced and a mayor or the police are more or less degraded to perpetrators.

If an Israeli rocket falls in Gaza and a building is destroyed, the Hamas Ministry of Health knows within a few minutes how many women and children are under the rubble. We must be careful that we, regular Dutch people, do not start using Hamas games and tactics. How everything went wrong after the football match is being investigated. Until the results are known, we do not yet know what exactly went wrong. But I do know one thing for sure: accusing our government of being supporters of the popular Jew-hatred is premature, incorrect and far from constructive.

But in the meantime, politics always remains politics and sometimes comparisons are made for political reasons that discolour the truth. Man bites dog, makes the front page.

Dog bites man is not mentioned at all, because that is normal and therefore not news. I have the same feeling when anti-Semitism is countered by Islamophobia. Let me look at myself for a moment. Have I ever cursed or wanted to curse a Muslim? Never! But a Muslim who shouts at me has been normal for years. When politicians place the until recently unknown word Islamophobia behind every remark about anti-Semitism, I have to think of that man who bites the dog.

But in the end, I can still go out on the street and take my daily walk. My parents did not have that privilege in the 1940s-1945, because the government was no good then!
