Open Letter from European Jewish Leaders to the Governments of Europe, Belgium and the Leaders of the European Institutions: Criminalisation of Circumcision in Belgium

“Stop this Madness and protect our Freedom of Religion”

The Chairman of the European Jewish Association (EJA) Rabbi Menachem Margolin and dozens of Jewish Leaders from Communities all over Europe, including the Presidents of Paris, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Porto and Amsterdam today published an open letter to European, EU and Belgian Political leaders urging them to act against a Belgian prosecutor’s attempt to criminalize circumcision and to protect Freedom of Religion.

“All the words of politicians about the importance of Jewish life in Europe mean nothing if they do not act immediately to stop this injustice,” said the Leaders.

The letter comes as Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office intends to refer two Jewish ritual circumcisers, known as mohels, to the correctional court, effectively criminalizing the act of circumcision. The Mohels, extensively trained in religious circumcision, are not doctors.

In their letter, the Jewish Leaders said:

“We are horrified that the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office intends to refer two Jewish ritual circumcisers, known as mohels, to the correctional court, effectively criminalizing the act of circumcision. In many countries a solution has been found that balances freedom of religion. In France, Holland and Germany for instance. We believe therefore, based on the Belgian authorities’ outright refusal to seek an accomodation, that this prosecution is antisemitic in nature, reminiscent of efforts taken in Europe against Jewish practice prior to the Second World War. That the same prosecutor’s office has too often closed clear cases of antisemitism but is now choosing to act against Jewish life itself confirms this belief.

We remind belgium that Freedom of religion is a fundamental right. This decision stands in direct contradiction to it. The message being sent here is clear: Jews are no longer welcome in Belgium. And Belgian jews are now Second class citizens with limited rights. Circumcision has been shown throughout decades of medical research to not be harmful to baby boys. In fact it has medical benefits – which is why so many people choose to circumcise their children outside of religion. Attacking circumcision in this manner – only when it relates to Jewish babies, is an attack on Jewish life in Europe.

All the words of politicians about the importance of Jewish life in Europe mean nothing if they do not act immediately to stop this injustice. We urge them and the Belgian Government to stop this madness. Circumcision is not a crime.”

FJO Meets Belgian Justice Minister Amidst Escalating Antisemitism Concerns; Former MP Van Langenhove Sentenced to Jail

The FJO held a meeting with Belgian’s minister of Justice Van Tigchelt in regard to the increasingly problematic situation of rising antisemitism. While the dialogue was constructive, with a focus on zero tolerance for antisemitic crimes, it remains to be seen what the future will hold.

Coincidentally, the case has been closed against former member of parliament, Dries Van Langenhove, who investigated, among other things, his sharing of content, denying or minimising the Shoah. He has been sentenced to 1 year in jail.

Polish legislation to outlaw blaming Poland for any crimes committed during the Holocaust.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, General Director of the European Jewish Association (EJA), calls upon Polish President Andrzej Duda, to exercise his constitutional rights and veto the shameful resolution of the Polish lower house of Parliament (Sejm) which took place on International Holocaust Memorial day.

Rabbi Margolin expressed his hope that the heads of all Polish political parties will come to their sences and revoke the resolutions by themselves.

“This legislation is a slap in the face – especially coming on International Holocaust Memorial Day – not only to the victims and to history but also to those Polish citizens who were deemed Righteous gentiles and saved Jews from Nazi extermination , who stood in stark contrast to those (too many) Polish citizens who cooperated with the Nazis”

Rabbi Margolin has instructed the EJA’s legal advisors to examine all legal avenues to revoke this shameful bil in the Polish Constitutional court and emphesized that in addition to the work in Poland, the EJA will conduct a campaign in the European Parliament and other EU institutions to have the bill revoked.

Please Watch Rabbi Margolin addressing the Polish Prime Minister on the issue:

Annual Conference for European Jewish Leadership

The forthcoming EJA Annual Conference is scheduled to take place in Amsterdam on 3rd and 4th June 2024, under the theme ‘Shaping Together the Future of European Jewry”.

We have selected Amsterdam as the venue for our annual conference in response to the mounting challenges confronting Jewry, characterized by significant upticks in antisemitism and vitriolic antizionism.

After the Hamas pogrom, the numbers simply exploded to levels last seen in Nazi Germany in

1939. In Holland, the picture is terrible. We gather to show strength in numbers and prioritise protecting and respecting Jewish life front and centre.

We are delighted to announce that the conference is being organized in collaboration with esteemed partners, including the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora and Combatting Antisemitism, the CJO (the umbrella organization of Dutch Jewry), the Union of Hungarian Jewish communities, the Jewish community of Porto, the Consistoire of Paris, the federation of UK synagogues, Christians for Israel, and others.

Furthermore, the Annual Conference will be graced by the presence of prominent political figures from across Europe, Israel, and the Netherlands. The event is also poised to garner attention from national, international, and Jewish media outlets spanning the continent.
