EJA’s advisor and coordinator for Germany, Oliver Bradley, accepted an invitation by the State Association of Jewish Communities in Brandenburg (Landesverband der Jüdischen Gemeinden Land Brandenburg) as guest speaker for the opening ceremony of the state of Brandenburg’s “Education and Action Weeks Against Anti-Semitism”, yesterday.

During the course of the evening, the Association also included Oliver Bradley among its honorees for “…resolute committente to cohesion and respectful coexistence in our society…”

Antisemitic incidents in the UK reach new high, new data shows

The war in Gaza appears to have triggered an alarming spike in threats against Jews and Jewish institutions, regardless of their relationship to the state of Israel.

The number of antisemitic incidents in the UK has reached a new annual high, according to data gathered by a Jewish safety watchdog.

The annual report from the Community Security Trust, or CST, recorded 4,103 antisemitic incidents in the UK in 2023, the highest total ever reported to the group in a single year.

The report’s findings, released on Thursday, represent the highest number of antisemitic incidents reported in a year in the UK since consistent monitoring began.

According to its data, drawn from self-reported incidents, two-thirds of the 2023 incidents occurred after the October 7 Hamas attacks in southern Israel: 2,699, compared with 392 over the same period in 2022.

This included 416 incidents reported to the CST, which works to protect British Jews from antisemitism, in the week following the attacks – the largest number in any week last year.

The types of altercations recorded include assault (up 96% since 2022) damage and desecration of Jewish property (up 146%), threats (up 196%) and abusive behaviour (up 149%). Online antisemitism rose by 257%.

“Seismic effect”

CST stated that the “driving force” behind the  147% surge in anti-Jewish abuse last year was Hamas’s attack on Israel on the 7th of October.

“This trigger event had a seismic effect on antisemitic incident levels in the UK that outweighs the impact of previous wars involving Israel, and the impact was instant,” the report said.

“Thirty-one instances of anti-Jewish hate were reported on 7 October, the day of Hamas’ attack, whereas CST had recorded an average of five incidents per day between 1 January and 6 October.”

British Home Secretary James Cleverly condemned the rise in antisemitic abuse as “utterly deplorable”.

He said the government had taken steps to confront it, including increasing funding for protective security at Jewish schools and places of worship.

Two youths attack Austrian Jewish teen wearing Star of David ring

Two teenagers attacked a 16-year-old Jewish boy in the Austrian city of Gratz before he was able to get away.

According to a report from the Gratz Jewish community, the victim was wearing a ring decorated with a Star of David when he was accosted March 4 on the street near a high school by the two teens, who demanded to know if he was Jewish. When he answered that he was, the boys told him to “piss off.” Then one of the boys slapped and punched him in the face while calling him a “shit Jew.”
In a statement Elie Rosen, head of the Jewish community in Gratz, said local schools need help in addressing antisemitism and should not only be teaching about the Holocaust but about the history of the Middle East conflict.
“The fact is, the word ‘Jew’ is used as an insult in schoolyards,” the statement read in part. “We have to help schools prepare to take on this problem.”
“Unfortunately, Gratz is not an exceptional case,” he added. “This incident is part of a development in Europe.”
Rosen accused society in general and the political leadership of failing to take such incidents seriously.
According to statistics on antisemitism in Europe compiled by the European Action and Protection League, antisemitic incidents in Austria more than doubled in 2018 to 547 from 255 in 2014. Data for several countries was presented at the European Jewish Association annual conference in Paris last month.
With more than 150 members, the Jewish community of Gratz is the second largest in Austria. According to the European Jewish Congress, about 15,000 Jews live in Austria today, most of them in Vienna.

Condolences for our Board Member and Dear Friend- Dutch Chief Rabbi Jacobs

We at the EJA were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of the son, alav ha-shalom, of Dutch Chief Rabbi Jacobs, our board member, Rabbinical Centre of Europe governmental affairs head and, above all, our friend.
The greatest tragedy a parent can experience is the loss of a child, whatever the circumstances. Most of us cannot envisage let alone begin to understand the pain that parents will go through.
All we can do is attempt to offer words of comfort, words of consolation, to be there for them, to sustain them with our thoughts and prayers.
To Rabbi Jacobs, Mrs Jacobs and family we extend our heartfelt condolences and say,
“May the Almighty comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
