“Stop this Madness and protect our Freedom of Religion”

The Chairman of the European Jewish Association (EJA) Rabbi Menachem Margolin and dozens of Jewish Leaders from Communities all over Europe, including the Presidents of Paris, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Porto and Amsterdam today published an open letter to European, EU and Belgian Political leaders urging them to act against a Belgian prosecutor’s attempt to criminalize circumcision and to protect Freedom of Religion.

“All the words of politicians about the importance of Jewish life in Europe mean nothing if they do not act immediately to stop this injustice,” said the Leaders.

The letter comes as Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office intends to refer two Jewish ritual circumcisers, known as mohels, to the correctional court, effectively criminalizing the act of circumcision. The Mohels, extensively trained in religious circumcision, are not doctors.

In their letter, the Jewish Leaders said:

“We are horrified that the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office intends to refer two Jewish ritual circumcisers, known as mohels, to the correctional court, effectively criminalizing the act of circumcision. In many countries a solution has been found that balances freedom of religion. In France, Holland and Germany for instance. We believe therefore, based on the Belgian authorities’ outright refusal to seek an accomodation, that this prosecution is antisemitic in nature, reminiscent of efforts taken in Europe against Jewish practice prior to the Second World War. That the same prosecutor’s office has too often closed clear cases of antisemitism but is now choosing to act against Jewish life itself confirms this belief.

We remind belgium that Freedom of religion is a fundamental right. This decision stands in direct contradiction to it. The message being sent here is clear: Jews are no longer welcome in Belgium. And Belgian jews are now Second class citizens with limited rights. Circumcision has been shown throughout decades of medical research to not be harmful to baby boys. In fact it has medical benefits – which is why so many people choose to circumcise their children outside of religion. Attacking circumcision in this manner – only when it relates to Jewish babies, is an attack on Jewish life in Europe.

This morning (17 May), a delegation from the European Jewish Association met with newly appointed Prime Minister Dritan Abazović and Minister of Justice Marko Marko Kovač and representatives of the Prime Minister’s office including his Foreign Policy Adviser Mr Dorde Radulovic.

The EJA Delegation headed by Chairman Rabbi Menachem Margolin, was organised by Chief Rabbi of Montenegro Ari Edelkopf, and included Mrs Ellen Van Praag, Chair of IPOR, Netherlands, Riccardo Pacifici, Senior Board Member of the EJA respresenting the Jewish Community of Rome, and Alex Benjamin, Director of the EJA.

The delegation came to congratulate the Prime Minister on his new government, extend invitations to collaborate and co-operate, and to underline how important Montenegro is to Jewish people across Europe for its support and development of a growing Jewish Community. Montenegro, whilst small in size, is a David when it comes to creating a society where freedom of Religion is not only encouraged, but actively supported. For the EJA Montenegro represents an exemplar for other European countries to emulate and aspire to.

The delegation also witnessed the official handing over of government documents to Chief Rabbi Edelkopf from the Minister of Justice of Montenegro formally recognising the Jewish Community of Montenegro.

Paris Mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has inaugurated an alley bearing the name of Mireille Knoll, a 85-year-old Holocaust survivor who was brutally murdered in her apartment in a antisemitic attack.
The alley is located on the Boulevard de Ménilmontant, in the 11th arrondissement of the French capital.
Knoll was brutally murdered in her apartment in a antisemitic attack on March 23, 2018. Firefighters who arrived at Knoll’s building later that night to answer an emergency call discovered her partially-burned body with 11 stab wounds.

Following Belgian Magazine Humo’ removal of the offensive and antisemitic article by Mr Brusselmans , the European Jewish Association (EJA) acknowledged it “ as a step in the right direction” , but said the legal case against the writer, magazine and publisher would continue “until justice is properly and meaningfully served”.

EJA chairman, Rabbi Menachem Margolin said in a statement today,

The removal of the highly offensive article is a step in the right direction.

However, the author has shown zero remorse for his “thought experiment” of murdering any Jew he meets in the street. He continues to regard incitement to murder as his freedom of speech.

The magazine editors only belatedly decided to remove the offending piece after a massive public outcry.

This is all much too little, much too late.

The EJA and a coalition of concerned Jewish leaders and organisations in Belgium will continue our legal action against the writer, magazine and publisher.

We still demand a full apology from the magazine and the suspension of Mr Brusselmans.

A strong, uncompromising response is absolutely necessary lest others think they can also call publicly for the mass murder of Jews.

We will not rest until justice is properly and meaningfully served.”
