כ־300 מנהיגי הקהילות החברות באיגוד הארגונים היהודיים באירופה התכנסו בבודפשט תחת אמצעי ביטחון קפדניים, בנוכחותם של נציגים בכירים וחברי פרלמנט ממדינות האיחוד האירופי, כדי לדון בנושאים דחופים המעיקים על יהודי היבשת.
בין הנושאים: המצב שיצרה המלחמה באוקראינה וחופש הפולחן הדתי המאוים על ידי איסור השחיטה הכשרה כפי שקרה בבלגיה, שבה בוטלה הגזירה באזור בריסל בלבד, התגברות האנטישמיות ועוד.
משתתפי הכנס פנו בהצעות מעשיות לממשלות האיחוד האירופי על בסיס סקר ראשון מסוגו שבחן את איכות חיי היהודים וביצועיהן של 12 ממשלות באירופה בפרמטרים המרכזיים הנדרשים לקיום חיים יהודיים, ובהם פעילות נגד אנטישמיות, אבטחת ביטחון וחופש דת והצבעות בעד או נגד ישראל באו”ם. לפי הסקר, המדינות הידידותיות ביותר ליהודים הן איטליה, הונגריה ודנמרק. בתחתית הרשימה: צרפת, פולין ובלגיה.
בתחום הביצועים המעשיים למען הקהילות ניצבות בראש הדירוג גרמניה, אוסטריה וצרפת, שלמרות תחושת חוסר הביטחון של היהודים בשטחה, היא עושה הכל לחיזוקו. בתחתית: דנמרק, ספרד ובלגיה.
לדברי נשיא איגוד הארגונים היהודיים הרב מנחם מרגולין, אין כוונה להתנגח במדינה זו או אחרת, אלא ליצור תשתית של השוואה שתאפשר למדינות ולקהילות נקיטת צעדים מעשיים. סגן ראש ממשלת הונגריה זסולט סמיין הדגיש את פעילות ממשלתו להגנת הקהילה היהודית המקומית ולמלחמה באנטישמיות ובהכחשת השואה, כולל פעולה נגד הגורמים הניאו־נאצים שעורכים מדי פעם הפגנות.
לדבריו, הונגריה בלמה לחלוטין את האנטישמיות, כשמנעה את האסלאם הפוליטי הקיצוני בכך שהקימה חומה ואסרה על הגירה בלתי חוקית. הונגריה גם תומכת בשחיטה הכשרה ומספקת בשר כשר למדינות אחרות.
סמיין אמר ל”מעריב” כי בכוונת ארצו להמשיך למנוע החלטות ומדיניות נגד ישראל באיחוד האירופי, ואף להתנגד למימון ארגוני טרור על ידי אירופה. במקביל היא תפעל ליישום ההסכמים הכלכליים עם ישראל, שהאיחוד הקפיא בשנים האחרונות, ותמשיך לפתח את יחסיה הכלכליים עם ישראל – שנמצאים כבר עכשיו בדרגה גבוהה.
הונגריה מכירה בירושלים כבירת ישראל אך לא תעביר את שגרירותה לשם, בכפוף למדיניות האיחוד האירופי. הוא גינה את השימוש בתירוץ ה”דנציפיקציה” על ידי רוסיה בפלישה למדינה ריבונית כמו אוקראינה, למרות קיומם של חוגים ניאו־נאצים במדינה והמעשים שביצעו אוקראינים בתקופת השואה, ולמרות דיכוי שפות המיעוטים כמו רוסית והונגרית.
סגנית נשיאת הפרלמנט האירופי ניקולה באר, העומדת בראש הקבוצה נגד האנטישמיות, סיפרה למתכנסים על הצעדים הננקטים בנושא זה, וסגן שר הפנים היווני סטברוס קלפטיס הודיע על הקמה של מוזיאון שואה בסלוניקי, שיהיה מן הגדולים בעולם.
European Jewish Association’s King David Award gives recognition for “fearlessly and unambiguously taking the lead on the issue”, urge other clubs to follow Chelsea’s lead.
‘’Since our Club Owner Roman Abramovich initiated our ‘Say No To Antisemitism’ campaign in January 2018, we have been committed to working with Jewish organisations nationally and internationally to help stamp out antisemitism from our societies. We will continue to use our global platforms at Chelsea to say no to antisemitism and keep up the fight against this and all other forms of discrimination,”said Bruce Buck, Chairman of Chelsea FC who received the award on behalf of his club at Stamford bridge.
During Tuesday evening Chelsea vs Juventus Champions League game at Stamford bridge, a delegation from the European Jewish Association presented the Association’s prestigious King David Award for 2021 to Bruce Buck, Chairman of the Chelsea Football Club.
The recognition comes as a result of Chelsea’s ‘’Say No to Antisemitism’’ campaign, funded by club owner Roman Abramovich, which was launched in 2018 to raise awareness of and educate players, staff, fans and the wider community about antisemitism. The long-term initiative forms part of the club’s on-going inclusion work, through the Chelsea Foundation’s Building Bridges campaign.
“We are honoured to be the latest recipients of the European Jewish Association’s King David Award,’’ said Bruce Buck who received the award on behalf of his club. ‘’Since our Club Owner Roman Abramovich initiated our ‘Say No To Antisemitism’ campaign in January 2018, we have been committed to working with Jewish organisations nationally and internationally to help stamp out antisemitism from our societies. We will continue to use our global platforms at Chelsea to say no to antisemitism and keep up the fight against this and all other forms of discrimination,” he added.
Rabbi Menachem Margolin, Chairman of the European Jewish Association said of the award, “Sport brings out the best in people, but sadly it can also bring out the worst. And some of the worst examples of antisemitism often manifest themselves on the football terraces, and in stadia around the world. Chelsea was, of course, no exception to this rule. Except, that unlike others, they decided to do something about it.’’
“It is truly inspiring to see not only the significant investment made in this effort, but the genuine commitment to listen, to act and to make a difference. From the ground up, from grassroots initiatives to a website visited by millions, Chelsea Football Club has led the way, a shining light and example not just for other football clubs to follow, but for everyone,’’ he said.
He added, ‘’Presenting them with this award, on behalf of the many communities across Europe that we represent is the least we can do to recognise this movement for change that they have started, this ultimate force for good that gives hope to Jews everywhere that the lessons of the Holocaust will never be forgotten, and that antisemitism will be called out wherever it manifests itself.’’
Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs, Chief Rabbi in the Netherlands and chairman of the EJA committee on combatting antisemitism, ‘’ underlined that ‘’the Chelsea model is one to be replicated everywhere, and we will let governments and organisations know about the great and important work you are doing here. King david is a Jewish hero. Chelsea are now heroes to the Jewish community.’’
Lebanese businessman Abdallah Chatila, a recipient of the 2020 King David Award who made headlines worldwide when he bought 600,000 Euro worth of Nazi Memorabilia at an auction and donated it to Jewish organisations as an act of registering his disgust at the auction, and who since has supported many initiatives that combat antisemitism, added:
“Antisemitism targets Jews but infects society as a whole. Ignorance, hatred and xenophobia have no place in a world where borders are increasingly meaningless, where values are universal and where different identities are to be cherished. I am proud to be here tonight at Chelsea, to be a continuing link in a chain of those committed to combatting antisemitism. Chelsea Football Club have a huge reach. They could have opted for an easier route. Instead they decided to tackle the issue head-on. It is inspiring to see. And for others to follow and emulate.”

As the war in Ukraine enters a second week, Europe is witnessing a huge influx of refugees fleeing Ukraine toward the West, including many Ukrainian Jews in this surge to safety.The Brussels-based European Jewish Association (EJA), representing hundreds of communities across the continent, has launched a Europe-wide campaign to temporarily provide homes, food and clothing to hundreds of Jewish families whose lives have been torn apart and upended by the conflict in Ukraine.
The appeal has gone out to Jewish communities from Lisbon to Lublin, Bucharest to Bordeaux, and everywhere in between.
“The history of the Jewish people is one of displacement, either because of pogrom or war,” said Rabbi Menachem Margolin, EJA chairman. “We are only too aware of what it means to be forced to up and leave at a moment’s notice. In almost every one of our communities you will hear such stories. We, the Jewish people, are especially attuned to these catastrophes. And because we are so attuned, we are pre-programmed to help our Jewish neighbors, just as we always have.
“I have faith that this campaign will deliver. Since the war started, Jews from all over Europe have been getting in touch with us to see what can be done to help their Ukrainian Jewish brothers and sisters in need. We are providing them with the vehicle to do just that, by offering shelter, food and clothing to those who left in a hurry, often with nothing but the clothes on their backs.”
Another European Jewish organization very active on the ground is the Conference of European Rabbis, which announced this week that Israeli technology investor Yuri Milner has donated $3 million to the CER to help Jewish refugees from Ukraine.
“As we witness the terrible human suffering in Ukraine, the Conference of European Rabbis would like to announce a special donation of $3m. from the foundation established by Yuri and Julia Milner,” said the conference. “Yuri is an Israeli technology investor and science philanthropist.”
“The CER is grateful to Yuri and Julia Milner for their long-standing support and for this latest commitment to the Jewish community at this perilous time,” said CER President Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt.
It’s a challenging time for Jewish communities in Europe. Anti-Semitism is on the rise as populism and the politics of the lowest common denominator are gaining traction. Our communities often need round the clock protection and our practices and customs such as keeping Kosher are under pressure from increasing political interference.
